RADIOPROTECTIVE PROPERTIES OF DIANABOL (in Polish)

Since impairment of protein metabolism, especially increased catabolism, plays an important role in the pathogenesis and clinical signs of the radiation sickness, an attempt was made to inhibit protein catabolism by the anabolic steroid Diandabol during the course of irradiation sickness. Experiments were performed in 100 mice and 24 rats. The mice were given 300 r (LD/sub 50/) doses of x rays and the rats 450 r (LD/sub 100/). The effects of Dianabol on survival, body weight, and hematologic changes were studied. A protective effect on Dianabol, given by stomach tube in the rats (1 mg/kg body wt) for 7 days preceding and 14 days following irradiation was observed as follows: survival: the mortality in the control group was 100% while in the group of animals given Dianabol none died; protection against the loss of body weight caused by irradiation; and decrease of the postirradiation leukopenia. If given after irradiation Dianabol inhibits only slightly the mortality of rats and has no effect on the loss of body weight and leukopenia. A similar protective effect was achieved in mice. Dianabol (1 mg/ kg body wt) given for 7 days preceding and 14 following the irradiation protected the animals against the sequellae of the LD/sub 50/ doses of x rays. Only a slight effect on the survival was noted if Dianabol was given after irradiation. (BBB)
