CREATION OF PERMISSIBLE INJECTION CURRENTS IN A STRONG-FOCUSING PROTON SYNCHROTRON (in Russian)

The highest energies of accelerated particles, 25 to 30 Bev, are currently obtained by means of strong-focusing synchrotrons; for still higher energies linear accelerators with strong magnetic focusing are being designed. In proton synchrotrons the increase of beam intensity is connected with the injection; therefore an attempt was the problem of Coulomb interaction of the particles in the accelerated beam. The limitations of the peak current of the accelerated beam in a linear ionic accelerator with magnetic focusing were determined. One of the important technical problends that had to be solved involved the requirement of charging the accelerating system with the beam curient which necessitates a sufficiently high frequency power supply together with compensation for the phase shift of the accelerating voltage; another problem is presented by the decrease of the Coulomb frequency of the transversal oscillations in the front portion of the injector.
