INCORPORATION OF I$sup 131$ BY THE HUMAN THYROID: AUTORADIOGRAPHIC STUDY

Journal Article · · Acta Physiologica Latinoamericana (Argentina)
OSTI ID:4777189
Localization of I/sup 131/ within histologic structures of the thyroid gland was studied by stripping-film autoradiography in biopsied specimens 24 hr after injection of 2 mc I/sup 131/. The distribution pattern could be correlated with the state of follicle cells and colloid deposits. Uptake was not uniform but depended on the height of these cells, the higher the cells the lower the uptake. Exceptions to this rule, i.e., variations in uptake by epithelium of the same height, support the concept that intrafollicular changes in I/sup 131/ metabolism reflect phases of follicular function. In various thyroid disorders the I/sup 131/ uptake could generally be correlated with follicular function. (H.H.D.)
