STUDIES OF RATES OF TRANSFER OF D$sub 2$O, H$sub 3$*, Cl$sup 36$, Na$sup 22$, AND Mg$sup 28$ ACROSS THE ISOLATED PERICARDIUM OF DOGS
A method is described for the study of the rates of /, Cl/sup 36/, Na/ sup 22/, across the isolated pericardium of dogs. This method has applications in tracer studies in other biologic fields. The mean coefficients of transfer across the isolated pericardium in vitro were aa follows: D/sub 2/O, 3.06 x 10/ sup -2/; H/sup 3/, 2.81 x 10/sup -2/; Cl/sup 36/, 1.95 x 10/sup -2/; Na/sup 22/, 1.75 x 1 0/sup -2/; and Mg/sup 28/, 1.00 x 10/sup -2/ (milliliters per centimeter/ sup 2/ per minute). The coefficients of transfer of D/sub 2/O and H/sup 3/ were essentially the same and faster than those of Cl/sup 36/ and Na/sup 22/, which in turn were faster than those of Mg/sup 28/. These coefficients of transfer were compared with those determined in vivo, which were consistently lower. The coefficient of transfer of Cl/sup 36/ across a pericardial segment frozen overnight and thawed was higher than that across the freshly isolated segment of pericardium. (auth)
