RADIOACTIVE PHOSPHORUS AND FERTILITY

The effect of Pa/sup 32/ on the gonads of BALB mice was studied. The ovary is more sensitive to P/sup 32/ than the testes since a dose of 40 mu c induces sterility in the female, while all males surviving doses of P/sup 32/ up to 205 mu c remain fertile. These animals were tested for fertility before the injection of P/sup 32/ and were mated afterwards during periods of 5 to 12 months. The histologic pattern of the ovaries shows generalized luteinization without the presence of primordial follicles. Testes show no alterations. Females injected with P/sup 32/ during pregnancy remain fertile after doses of 40 to 60 mu c, and only after 90 mu c became sterile, this represents more than twice the sterilizing dose for a nonpregnant female. Progesterone given at a dose of 2 mg per week during 4 weeks before P/sup 32/, and 2 weeks after, affords some protection, but it is not as complete as that afforded by pregnancy. (H.H.D.)
