EFFECT OF IONIZING RADIATION ON THE FREE DEOXYRIBONUCLEOSIDE AND DEOXYRIBONUCLEOTIDE CONTENT OF REGENERATING RAT LIVER

The free deoxyriboside and deoxyribotide level in rat liver was studied during regeneration after partial hepatectomy, after irradiation, and after the injection of cortisone. Regeneration was characterized by a mild increase in the deoxycytidine concentration and a marked increase in the deoxycytidylic acid concentration and in particular in the thymidylic acid concentration. after irradiation the methyldeoxycytidine and thymidylic acid concentration was lowered in normal and regenerating liver, while the deoxycytidylic acid level was lowered in regenerating liver and the deoxyuridine level was somewhat lowered in normal liver. The concentration of some deoxyribosidic substances in the liver rose, however, after irradiation. The deoxycytidylic acid level rose in normal liver, but not in regenerating liver, the deoxyuridine and thymidine level rose in regeneriting liver and the deoxyuridylic acid and deoxycytidine level rose both in normal and in regenerating liver. Some of the given criteria showed that cortisone had a similar effect to that of radiation, but of a lower degree, and in some cases no effect of cortisone was detected. (auth)
