ATTEMPT TO DETERMINE THE OPTIMAL DOSE IN THE RADIOTHERAPY OF HYPERTHYROID DISORDERS WITH I$sup 131$ CLINICAL RESULTS IN TREATED CASES (in French)
Follow-up studies were conducted in 72 hyperthyroid patients treated with I/sup 131/ 1 to 6 yr previously. The administered dose was calculated in rads by the method of Joyet (Ana. Radiol., in press). In 70% of the cases a euthyroid state was established; in another 10%, hypothyroidism or myxedema developed following I/sup 131/ treatment. I/sup 131/ appeared to induce unique changes in the thyroid; various indices of thyroid function failed to reflect clinical status. The results of I/sup 131/ treatment were not permanent, late myxedema occurring in some patients. Dessicated thyroid treatment was not helpful in cases with I/sup 131/-induced hypothyroidism. Thyroid function varied widely after I/sup 131/ treatment and it was necessary to wait several months to evaluate results before additional doses of I/sup 131/ was given. Total doses used in these patients varied from 3 to 50 mc, and the mean half-time for the disappearance of I/sup 131/ from these patients was 32 months. In 1 patient treated with 10 mc (5000 rad) a mediastinal spindle-cell sarcoma developed 1 yr later. The possible carcinogenic role of I/sup 131/ is discussed. (H.H.D.)
