MYXEDEMA FOLLOWING RADIOACTIVE IODINE THERAPY OF HYPERTHYROIDISM
The incidence of inadvertent induction of myxedema was investigated in 1603 patients with hyperthyroidism treated with radioactive iodine. Doses of I/ sup 131/ had been administered to give approximates 100 mu c I/sup 131/ retained per g of estimated thyroid weight. In 112 patients (8%) myxedema was present at the time of their final evaluation 1 to 8 yr after the completion of therapy; 1252 patients were euthyroid. In 103 additional patients, transient myxedema, which did not require the permanent use of supplemental thyroid medication, developed. Analysis of the factors influencing the myxedema rate showed that the incidence of myxedema was higher: in young patients, when I/sup 131/ was given after previous surgery or x-ray therapy, in patients with smaller glands, in those with short duration of disease or goiter, or when a smaller number of doses of I/sup 131/ was required for cure. Factors that tended to lower the incidence of myxedema were: previous therapy with antithyroid drugs or iodine, large thyroid glands, and larger number of doses required for cure. (P.C.H.)
