RADIATION DOSES RECEIVED IN FLUOROSCOPIC CHEST EXAMINATION

In order to estimate the radiation dose received by subjects undergoing fluoroscopic chest examinations at chest clinics, the exposure time and gonadal dose of scattered radiation were measured in 279 chest examinations. It was found that the mean time of exposure was 30 sec and the gonadal dose 0.075 mr for each examination. Within the direct beam, the dosage speed on the skin of the back was 4.6 r per min; with the usual diaphragm this corresponds with an integral dose of 1.2 kg roentgen. The dosages found were compared with the natural background radiation and with data obtained from studies made in Japan after the atomic bomb explosions. It was concluded that there is no need to restrict chest fluoroscopy programs at chest clinics on account of radiation hazards, provided they are carried out with due precautions. (Public Health Eng.
