The ovaries of 10% of girls below school age were irradiated by direct x rays when chest films were obtained by routine method. Boys below school age were not exposed to direct x rays over their gonads. In school girls about 0.6% received direct x rays over the gonads during the same examination. The ovarian dose was assumed to be about 10 mr per exposure. The chief reason for this is a radiation field of too large a size when the film is being taken. When x raying an infant, the gonads should be completely shielded from x rays as a routine procedure. (Abstr. Japan Med., 2: No. 9, Sept. 1962.)
