INHIBITING REACTION BETWEEN CARBON DIOXIDE AND GRAPHITE IN HETEROGENEOUS NUCLEAR REACTORS

A method is given for preventing the CO/sub 2/ + C yields 2CO reaction in CO/sub 2/-cooled graphite-moderated reactors. The method comprises supplying H/sub 2/ to the CO/sub 2/ coolant before it passes through the reactor core and removing the excess H/sub 2/O vapor from the coolant leaving the core. The concentrations may be 0.05 to 10% for H/sub 2/ (preferably 1%) and 0.05 to 0.1% for H/sub 2/O vapor. A circuit may also be provided for adding O/sub 2/ to the coolant to react with excess CO.
