A method is outlined for inhibiting the CO/sub 2/ + C yields 2CO reaction in graphite-moderated, CO/sub 2/-cooled reactors. The method comprises adding to the coolant 0.5 to 20 vol.% of H/sub 2/, CCl/sub 4/, CFCl/sub 3/, or CH/ sub 3/OH, and monitoring the additive concentration in the coolant in the reactor. Reaction rate results are presented for tests of the effects of the above additives on the CO/sub 2/ + graphite reaction under electric arc conditions. (D.L.C.)
