REPORT OF OBSERVATIONS ON METABOLISM AND NUTRITION: SUBTASK, RADIATION AND STERILIZATION OF FOODS FOR UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4774967
Investigations were made on the feeding of unirradiated or irradiated bacon and fruit compote to rats in a double feeding program. Two levels of irradiation were used: low level (1X) and high level (2X). One diet (both foods at 1X) was closely analyzed for any indication of an effect of the 1X level of irradiation. In most instances, the control animals showed as great or greater incidence of lesions than did the test groups. Although this implies that the factor of irradiation of foods prevented, to some degree, the development of lesions, it is not a definite conclusion. The few instances wherein statistical associations were noted often involved the diet in which the animals received both foods irradiated at the low level. Other associations were scattered and no consistent pattern was found that indicated that foods irradiated at the 2X level were the prime contributing factor. (P.C.H.)
