THE DIFFUSION OF COBALT IN PURE DELTA IRON

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4774851
The diffusion of Co in b-Fe was measured using Co/sup 60/ as the tracer. The diffusion penetrations are determined both by sectioning and by the residual activity method. The results are summarized by the following equation: D = 5.5 exp STA--61.2 x 10/sup 3/RT!. The energy of activation does not agree with the value of 68.3 kcal which was previously reported for the diffusion of Co in paramagnetic alpha -Fe. A lower energy of activation in the sigma -phase, as compared to the alpha -phase was also observed in the case of iron selfdiffusion. Within the combined limits of error the decrease is the same for both Fe and Co in sigma -Fe. Furthermore, at 1450 deg C the diffusion coefficient is approximately one third that which would be expected from the extrapolation of the alpha results. (auth)
