THE SELF-DIFFUSION OF IRON IN DELTA IRON

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4826241
The diffusion of Fe in delta Fe was measured using Fe/sup 59/ as the tracer. The diffusion penetrations were determined both by sectioning and by the residual activity method. The results are summarized by the equation D = 1.9 expSTA-57 x 10/sup 3//RT!. The energy of activation is significantiy lower than the value previously reported for the paramagnetic region of alpha Fe. It is possible that the diffusion coefficients of alpha Fe are affected by the short- range magnetic ordering. Alternatively, the decrease in activation energy may reflect a temperature dependence which is independent of the magnetic state and is a consequence of the extremely large range in temperature spanned by the measurements.
