THE ACTION OF ANTERIOR PITUITARY TRANSPLANTS ON THE WEIGHT AND THE FUNCTION OF ADRENAL GLANDS OF HYPOPHYSECTOMIZED RATS. EFFECTS OF X IRRADIATION

Male, 100-g rats were hypophysectomized and grafted With 6-10 anterior pituitaries from 20-day-old rats. Evidence for secretory activity of these transplanted glands is cited. The atrophic adrenal glands of the recipients partially recovered their normal weight. Stress, in the form of lethal 850-r whole-body irradiation, caused a marked drop in adrenal cholesterol content 3 hr later. After removal of the pituitary transplants irradiation produced no change in adrenal cholesterol, and adrenal Weight fell to that of hypophysectomized controls not receiving transplants. (H.H.D.)
