THE ACTION OF ANTERIOR PITUITARY TRANSPLANTS ON THE WEIGHT AND THE FUNCTION OF ADRENAL GLANDS OF HYPOPHYSECTOMIZED RATS

The influence of anterior pituitary transplants grafted inheterotopic positions on the weight and the functional activity of adrenal glands of hypophysectonized rats was studied. It was found that the grafted anterior pituitaries could indefinitely, and to a considerable degree, maintain or influence partial recovery of the weight of the adrenal glands. When exposed to a lethal dose of x rays the adrenal glands of thus treated rats showed a significant fall in cholesterol. Upon the removal of grafts the weight of the adrenal glands fell back to that of hypophysectomized controls, and the cholesterol reaction failed to take place. (auth)
