An investigation was made to determine whether the adrenal ascorbic acid reaction to external x irradiation, unilateral adrenalectomy, and epinephrine administration is restored at late periods after hypophysectomy. External x irradiation of rats at late periods after hypophysectomy was not accompanied by a decrease in ascorbic acid content of the adrenal glands. Compensatory hypertropy in response to unilateral adrenalectomy does not develop in hypophysectomized rats, regardless of the period after removal of the pituitary body. A significant decrease in the ascorbic acid content of the adrenal glands was observed in normal rats after epinephrine administration. Administration of epinephrine to rats 24 hr and 25 days after hypophysectomy did not change the adrenal ascorbic acid content. The data obtained indicate that no compensation for the adrenocorticotropic function of the hypophysis or extrahypophyseal pathways of action on the adrenal gland have developed at late periods after hypophysectomy. The results also confirmed that the effect of different stimuli on adrenal ascorbic acid takes place through the adenohypophysis. (P.C.H.)
