BETA RAY DETECTORS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4773211

A Geiger-Muller counter for detecting beta rays is designed which has a very low background counting rate and a very good beta counting efficiency. The counter is filled with an ionizable gas containlng a halogen quench, and its anode is shaped spherically on the side facing the window which is also conductive on its inner side and connected to the cathode wall. The dimension of the anode parallel to the window is between 0.15 and 0.75 times the largest cathode dimension parallel to the window, and the height of the discharge space at right angles to the window is between 0.25 and 1.5 times the longest window dimension. The smallest distance of the anode from the window is between 0.1 and 0.5 times the longest window dimension. (D.L.C.)
