A directional Geiger-Mueller counter tube is designed for detecting beta or alpha radiation in the presence of gamma radiation. The tube has a mica window and an electrically insulating sleeve disposed either around the anode wire or on the inner surface of the cathode in such a way that only a small part of either the anode or the cathode is left exposed near the end window.
