A Geiger-Mueller counter tube is designed for reduced dead times. The tube comprises a discharge space which is filled with a gas consisting of 0.005to 25 vol% of a halogen together with a rare gas, a cathode surrounding the discharge space, and an anode arranged inside the cathode, the distance between the anode and the cathode being smaller at a number of places than one-fourth of the mean anode-cathode distance. Thus, a field intensity considerably higher than the mean field intensity is produced at the said places on the cathode. The starting voltage is also lower and a longer and flatter plateau is obtained. (D.L.C.)
