A G-M counter tube is designed for low background in beta counting. The tube comprises a cathode wall, a convex anode within the wall, and a flat conductive window. The tube is filled with a gas consisting at lease 0.005 vol% halogen. The maximum dimension of the anode parallel to the window is between 0.15 and 0.75 times the largest cathode dimension parallel to the window. The largest height of the discharge space is between 0.25 and 1.5 times the largest window dimension. The smallest distance of the anode from the window is between 0.1 and 0.5 times the largest dimension of the window. (D.L.C.)
