ON THE CHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL PROTECTION FROM RADIATION INJURIES (in Italian)

Doses of 100 mg/kg of orotic acid given per os to rabbits for 10 days preceding exposure to 2,000 r x radiation increased survival from 6 hr for controls up to 198 hr for treated animals. The life span of animals exposed to 100 r per day to death was increased from 20 days in control animals up to 41 days by the administration of potassiurn orotare. The protective effects of vitamins against radiation injuries and the mechanism by which the previtamin orotic acid acts are discussed. (C.H.)
