RADIOLYSIS OF ASCORBIC ACID IN AQUEOUS SOLUTION BY GAMMA RADIATION

Journal Article · · Radiation Res.
OSTI ID:4771603

S>Ascorbic acid was rapidly destroyed by gamma radiation in dilute solutions. The main initial product formed was dehydroascorbic acid, which underwent further oxidation under irradiation. Formic, acetic, and oxalic acids, but not metaphosphoric acid, when present in solution reduced the radiation damage to ascorbic acid in varying degrees. Formic acid was very effective in this respect. Destruction of ascorbic acid by radiation was enhanced in the presence of oxygen, but the presence of dissolved CO/sub 2/ caused a considerable decrease in ascorbic acid oxidation by radiation. The mechanisms of ascorbic acid oxidation by radiation in aqueous solution are discussed. It is show that the initial yields are in good agreement with those predicted by certain extensions of the series of radicai reactions previously proposed by others. (auth)
