EQUIVALENCE OF Sr AND Ca IN RELATION TO THE PARATHYROID (in Italian)

Journal Article · · Atti accad. med. lombarda
OSTI ID:4770831
Hyperparathyroidism, induced in rats by feeding a Cadeficient diet for 30 days, could be corrected by feeding a diet containing Sr salts as well as by one containing Ca salts. The growth curves of rats fed a Ca-deficient diet supplemented with Sr could not be distinguished from those of rats on a normal diet or rats on a Ca-supplemented diet, whereas rats on a Ca-deficient diet were 20% below normal body welght by the 20th day. The number of nuclei per unit area of parathyroid tissue sections was 86.5 in control rats; 82.5 in Ca-deficient, Sr- supplemented rats; and 57.5 in Ca-deficient rats. It is evident that Sr can replace Ca in the role of parathyroid homeostasis. (H.H.D.)
