Phosphorylated organic ion exchangers can selectively complex iron, thorium, uranium, and other elements. A phosphorylated organic ion exchanger was made by copolymerizing the diisobutyl ether of vinylphosphinic acid with acrylic acid. Two to four percent triallylcyanurate was used as a cross-linking agent. The organic ion exchanger is insoluble in water and in organic solvents. It is stable to acids and bases. The capacity of the ionexchanger for the absorption of Fe/sup 3+/ from a 0.1 N solution of FeCl/sub 3/ was found to be 6.4 mg- equivalents per gram after 2 hours contact time, 7.2 at 4 hours, 12.2 at 24 hours and 12.3 mg-equivalents per gram after 48 hours contact time. Equilibrium is established in 24 hours. The adsorbed Fe/sup 3+/ is removed completely after 4 hours contact with 0.5 N HCl. (TTT)
