An organic monomer was grafted to a mineral sorbent by irradiating powdered silica gel (primarily SiO/sub 2/) with x rays (integral dose of 5 x 10/ sup 6/ rads), at a temperature of 90 deg C with a monomer vapor pressure of 30 mm in the case of styrene, and 25 mm Hg in the case of acrylic acid. The mineral- organic product contained 21 wt % of grafted polystyrene (with respect to the SiO/ sub 2/ content) which was sulfonated by treatment with H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ in the presence of a silver catalyst at 80 deg C. The resulting product showed ion- exchange properties with a total capacity of 1.4 mg-equivalent/g, as determined in 0.1N NaOH. The exchange capacity of the unsulfonated resin was 0.5 mg- equivalent/g. The ionexchanger does not swell in water or in aqueous solutions. A mineral-organic ion-exchanger with functional carboxylic groups was obtained by using powdered silica gel and acrylic acid as a monomer. This resin did not swell in water, and had an exchange capacity of 3 mg-equivalents/g. Equilibrium between a dilute salt solution and the resin was established much more rapidly with the mineral-organic resin than with a conventionai resin such as sulfonated polystyrene. Thus, in a 2 x 10/sup -4/N salt solution, equilibrium was established within 10 minutes for the mineral-organic resin, but only 13 % of the equilibrium capacity was used up in a KU-2 resin (a sulfonated polystyrene resin).
