A sulfophenolformaldehyde cation exchange material KU--1G in the form of spheres 0.25 to 1.50 mm in diameter and in the form of film with polyethylene as a binding agent was used to prepare Cs/aup 137/ sources. The Cs/sup 137/ had a specific activity of 13 curies/g. After absorption from a 0.15 N solution of cesium chloride it was found that the resin had a specific activity of 9.8 curies/ g on adsorption from a neutral solution, and 15.1 curies/g on adsorption from 0.032 N NaOH. One bead of ion-exchange material 1.50 mm in diameter can hold 35.5 millicuries of Cs/sup 137/. The ionexchange membrane had a specific activity of 0.516 curies/cm/. The method can be used to form radiation sources of a definite shape with a minimum amount of fines as a by-product. At a total dose of 4.38 x l0/sup 23/ ev/gram, delivered to the organic ion-exchanger over a period of l80 days, it was found that 0.04 mm3 of gas is evolved per day (this amount of gas corresponds to 2.9% of the volume of the ion-exchanger per day). The amount of gas evolved could be reduced by a factor of about four by heating the ionexchanger at 400 f C for 6 hours, instead of at l70 f C, in order to remove water. The incorporation of l5 mg of palladium black in sources having a specific activity > l.2 curies/gram absorbed the hydrogen gas evolved, and eliminated the build-up of pressure in the source. (TTT)
