A MODIFIED TIME-OF-FLIGHT MASS SPECTROMETER FOR STUDYING ION-MOLECULE OR NEUTRAL PARTICLE-MOLECULE INTERACTIONS

Journal Article · · J. Sci. Instr.
An account is given of the construction, operation, and applications of an ion source and its auxiliary equipment, which can provide ion beams up to 5 mu a. The apparatus can supply continuous or pulsed beams of ions or energetic neutral atoms, radicals, or molecules, with chosen translational energy from 0 to 2000 ev. It is used in conjunction with a time-of-flight mass spectrometer to study ion-molecule interactions or neutral particle--molecule interactions of two types, viz. gas-phase collisions and the sputtering of surfaces.
