LIPID COMPOSITION OF LIVER MITOCHONDRIA FROM NORMAL AND X-RAY IRRADIATED FASTED RATS

When mitochondrial lipids from non-irradiated or irradiated fasted rats were fractionated on silicic acid columns with strict precautions to avoid oxidation a mixture of phosphatidic-acid polymers of cardiolipin-like structure was isolated. The mitochondrial cardiolipins showed paper chromatograms, infrared spectra, and fatty acids resembling those of pure commercial cardiolipins. The cardiolipin phosphorus of the liver mitochondria of fasted rats was estimated to be about 9% of the total lipid phosphorus of the material. Whole-body x-irradiation caused a significant elevation of the total lipids and total phospholipids of the liver mitochondria, which could be accounted for by a proportionate elevation of the cardiolipin fraction. Other phospholipid fractions were little affected by irradiation. (C.H.)
