The effect of x-ray irradiation on the phospholipids of the liver mitochondria

Journal Article · · Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics
Evidence is presented that whole-body x irradiation produces increase of total lipid phosphorus as well as change of phospholipid distribution in liver mitochondria of fasted rats. One polyglycerolphosphatide, which was identified as phosphatidylglycerol, increased out of proportion to over four times of the control value to become a significant component of the irradiated mitochondria. The other polyglycerolphosphatide, cardiolipin, conversely was possibly even lower after the x rays. The phosphorus value of phosphatidylethanolamine dropped even more significantiy almost balancing the relative increase of phosphatidylglycerol. Phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylserine, phosphoinositide, and sphingomyelin per cent values were slightly lowered or unchanged by the irradiation. The changes also affected the actual amounts of the individual mitochondrial phosphatides per gram wet liver in a different manner. The actual amount of mitochondrial phosphatidylglycerol thus increased over four times, that of phosphatidylcholine only by 21%, while the amounts of the other phosphatides remained almost unchanged after the x rays.
