CHANGES IN THE METHIONINE-CARBON-14 METABOLISM IN CALCIFIED TISSUES DURING ACUTE RADIATION SICKNESS (in Russian)

Injury to the mineral metabolism is one of the most important pathogenic factors in the development of radiation lnjury; in particular it is also established that the metabolism of C/sup 14/-labeled glycine is also disturbed, (Radiobiologiya 1: 340(1961)). This work was extended to include the metabolism of C/sup 14/-labeled methionine under the same experimental conditions, using inbred rats exposed to a single, whole-body radiation of 50 r. The animals were killed 1 to 50 days after the exposure. It was found that within 1 to 30 days the methionine metabolism is strongly depressed. The thighs and to a lesser extent the teeth of the irradiated animals exhibited the most marked reduction in the incorporation rate of methionine. After 50 days the methionine content of the exposed animals approached that of the control group; this normalization of the metabolism coincided with the initial stages of the regenerative processes in the calcified tissues. It was concluded that the calcified tissues are not as radiosensitive as it was assumed previously. (TTT)
