EFFECTS OF INCORPORATED RADIOACTIVE IODINE ON PROTOMETABOLISM IN CALCIFIED TISSUES (in Russian)

Four sets of experimerts were carried out with 156 inbred rats weighing 132.4 plus or minus 3.6 g treated with a single dose of /sup 131/I injected as carrier-free potassium iodide in doses of 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 mu C/g animal weight. Glycine, labeled with /sup 14/C in the methyl group, was used for determining protometabolism in 636 specimens of calcified protein tissue obtained from irradiated rats that were put to death from 1 to 120 days following the exposure. It was found that a 0.5- mu C dose of /sup 131/I injected into rats induced a hypothyrosis, a 1 mu C/g dose induced a strong hypothyrosis, while 2 to 4 mu C resulted in destruction of the thyroid gland. A weak resorption of jaw bone tissue was observed soon after the injection of 4- mu C/g doses. Fibrosclerosis of the jaw bone tissue was developed at later dates while neither teeth nor hip bone showed any effects. It was also found that the glycine metabolism disturbance is a direct function of the /sup 131/I dose. (R.V.J.)
