INACTIVATION OF BACTERIOPHAGE T6 IN AN AQUEOUS SYSTEM BY HIGH-ENERGY PROTONS

The bacteriophage T8 was irradiated by high energy protons of different iinear energy transfer (LET) in order to study the effect of changing the LET in an aqueous system. The inactivation cross-section per proton remained constant for various LETs in a dilute system, resulting in a high inactivating efficiency of high energy protons per unit absorbed dose. Phages carrying the halogenated DNA were also studied in regard to the direct and the indirect inactivation by ionizing radiations. The increase of the radiosensitivity by the halogenation was found only on the direct action, suggesting the phage DNA is the principal target to the radiation. The substituted molecules themselves, 5bromodeoxyuridine and 5-iododeoxyuridine, were irradiated in an aqueous solution, showing the ring structure of the molecules is of the same degree of radiosensitivity as the normal component in DNA, thymidine, and not responsible for the increase of radiosensitivity.
