HYPERFINE INTERACTIONS OF THE 2$sup +$ STATE IN Dy$sup 16$$sup 0$

Journal Article · · Nuclear Physics (Netherlands) Divided into Nucl. Phys. A and Nucl. Phys. B
The hyperfine interaction of the 2/sup +/ state in Dy/sup 160/ situated in ferrimagnetic dysprosium iron garnet (DIG) is studied at room temperature by measuring the perturbation of the angular correlation of gamma cascades passing through this state. A large rotation of the angular correlation pattern is observed when the domains are aligned in an external magnetic field perpendicular to the plane of the counters. A longitudinal external field is used to decouple the effectively static part of the hyperfine interaction and isolate the timedependent interactions. The quantity g mu /sub n/H/sub eff//h is found to be (160 plus or minus 50) Mc. Assuming H/eff/ equals 6.0 x 10/sup 5/ Oe from recoil-free experiments, the g factor of the 2/sup +/ state is found to be 0.32 plus or minus 0.10. The relaxation times characterizing the time-dependent perturbation are estimated to be (1.5 plus or minus 0.5) x 10/sup -12/ sec for DIG and (0.9 plus or minus 0.3) x 10/sup -12/ sec for aqueous solution of TbCl/ sub 3/.
