HYPERFINE INTERACTIONS OF THE 2+ STATE IN Dy$sup 160$ SITUATED IN DYSPROSIUM IRON GARNET USING $gamma$$-$$gamma$ ANGULAR CORRELATION TECHNIQUE. Technical Note No. 7

The hyperfine interaction of the 2+ state in Dy/sup 160/ situated in ferrim-agnetic dysprosium iron garnet (DIG) was studied at room temperature by measuring the perturbation of the angular correlation of gamma-cascades passing through this state. A large rotation of the angular correlation pattern was observed when the domains were aligned in an external magnetic field perpendicular to the plane of the counters. A longitudinal external field was used to decouple the effectively static part of the hyperfine interaction and isolate the time-dependent interactions. The effective hyperfine interaction was found to be 160 ction in DDT-C/ 50 Ms/ sec. Assuming H/sub eff/ equals 6.0 ction in DDT-C/ 10/sup 5/ Oe, the g factor of the 2+ state has a calculated value of 0.32 ction in DDT-C/ 0.10. The relaxation times characterizing the time-dependent perturbations are estimated to be (1.5 ction in DDT-C/ 0.5) x 10 to the minus 12th power sec for DIG. (auth)
