A STUDY WITH Fe$sup 59$ OF THE ERYTHROPOIETIC EFFECT OF THE PLASMA OF RATS IRRADIATED AND MADE ANEMIC WITH PHENYLHYRAZINE (in Spanish)

Rats exposed to 550 r gamma irradiation and treated with phenylhydrazine developed severe anemia (<3 g hemoglobin per 100 ml blood) within 2 weeks. During the period of maximum anemia the plasma of these rats contained a high level of erythropoietin (720 units per ml). The erythropoietic activity of this plasma is linearly related to the degree of anemia at hemoglobin levels below 7 g per 100 ml. Radiation alone produced only a slight anemia (9 g hemoglobin per 100 ml) in rats, and their plasma showed no erythropoietic activity. In experiments utilizing Fe/sup 59/ to follow erythropoiesis after injection of recipient rats with plasma from irradiated rats with hemolytic anemia, a biphasic response was noted, incorporation of Fe/sup 59/ showing maxima at 18 and 48 hr after injection of this plasma. This was interpreted as demonstrating that this plasma stimulates hemoglobin synthesis, as shown by the early increase in Fe/sup 59/ uptake, as well as promotes maturation of erythroblasts, as shown by the late phase at 48 hr.
