ON THE INFLUENCE OF IRRADIATION ON THE COMPOSITION OF SERUM PROTEINS
Rabbits were irradiated with 700 r and serum protein fractions were examined electrophoretically 11 and 14 days later. The most marked changes in protein fractions were noted on the 11th day, at which time the relative percentage of albwnin had fallen to 44 compared with 61% in nonirradiated controls; gamma -globulin had fallen to 4 from 12%; and alpha and BETA - globulins had increased to 34 from 10% and to 18 from 17%, respectively. The electrophoretic mobility and amino-acid composition of albumin were unaffected by irradiation, but some changes were noted in the globulin fractions. The cystlne- cysteine content of alpha -globulin was markedly decreased (to < 0.2 from 2.8%) and similar but less pronounced decreases also occurred in BETA - and gamma globulins. Histidine and lysine contents of alpha -globulin fell slightly and increased in the other 2 globulins. The results indicate that ionizing radiation causes changes in the synthesis or extravasation of serum proteins as well as the decomposition of some of them. Destruction of cystlne may be related to the radioprotective effect of cysteine and cysteamine. (H.H.D.)
