RADIO-MODIFYING ACTION OF TESTOSTERONE IN RATS EXPOSED TO THE EFFECT OF FAST NEUTRONS OR TO THE INTERNAL IRRADIATION BY BETA PARTICLES OF P$sup 3$$sup 2$

Male and female August rats were irradiated with a 2Mev beam of fast neutrons or with an injection of P/sup 32/ (internal irradiation by beta particles). The radiomodifying effects of an injection of testosterone given a week before irradiation were studied. The survival rate, the weight curve, and the use of radioactive iron by the hematopoietic system were determined. The utilization of fast neutrons allows the selective study of the effect of radiation on the digestive syndrome and, consequentiy, the detection of the effect of testosterone on this syndrome. In this series, a radioprotection was noticed in the female and a radiosensitization in the males. Injection of P/sup 32/ reproduces the symptoms of the medullary phase of the irradiation syndrome. It was established that the injection of testosterone does not modify the metabolism of the radioactive phosphorus injected in carrier-free solution nor, consequently, the dose received by the animals. In this series, testosterone protected the females and sensitized the males. (tr-auth)
