INVESTIGATION OF ISOTOPIC EXCHANGE OF HYDROGEN BETWEEN WATER AND THIOLS (in Russian)

The partition coefficients for hydrogen isotopes between water and thiols of composition C/sub 4/---C/sub 9/ were determined at 20 to 80 deg . The kinetics of isotopic exchange between water and thiols was investigated in- the presence of KOH, NaOH, H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/, and H/sub 2/S and in the absence of admixtures. It was shown that alkali and H/sub 2/S accelerate and H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ retards the isotopic exchange. It was also found that gamma radiation affects the rate of isotopic exchange without shifting the isotopic equilibrium. Comparisons of isotopic exchange and mutual solubility data showed that the isotopic exchange is limited by the aqueous phase resistance. With inert solvent the exchange is completed within seconds. Under counter-current conditions in a packed column the transport of deuterium takes place at a rate approaching that of ordinary difiusion processes in the system liquid---liquid. (auth)
