THE EFFECT OF THE H$sub 2$-H$sub 2$O ISOTOPE EXCHANGE AT THE SURFACE OF THE (Pd - H)cap alphas ELECTRODE ON ITS POTEENTIAL (in German)

In order to investigate the effect of isotope exchange between hydrogen and heavy water on the potential of the (PdH)/sub alpha s/ electrode, measurements were made in H/sub 2/H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ and H/sub 2//(D/sub 2/PO/sub 4/ + H/sub 3/PO/sub 4/). The experimental method is briefly described and the results are discussed. The results lead to the conclusion that the isotope effect on the potential of the (Pd-H)/ alpha s/ electrode is additive and amounts to DELTA E = 0.01992 v for 100 mole% deuterium at 30% C. The isotope exchange- absorption reaction between hydrogen and heavy water in the presence of metallic Pd leads to the same isotope distribution in the metal and in the solution. (J.S.R.)
