The changes in starch solutions were studied after irradiation with Co/ sup 60/ of various doses. Mondamin solutions were irradiated in test tubes with doses in the range 2,000-500,000 r and pH and viscosity were measured. As a test for chemical changes the colour was determined after precipitation with alcohol. The viscosity decreases with increasing dose. The first marked viscosity change can be observed after irradiation with 2,000 r. In the higher dose range the change rate decreases. No influence of dose rate was observed. The mean pH value of the non-irradiated solution was 5.3. After irradiation with 50,000 r a value of 3.95 was measured. It is concluded that the irradiation of starch solutions results in a splitting of the molecular chain. This process depends on the oxygen availability in the solution. (Gmelin)
