Changes occurring in 2.5% starch solution after Co/sup 60/irradiation are reported. The splitting of the amylose molecule was determined with Lugol's solution during a series of alcohol precipitation, and by changes in viscosity. The breakdown of the amylose molecule increased with increasing dose; the amylose molecule was completely gone after irradiation with 1,000,000 rad. The size of the formed partmolecules is statistically random. Accumulation of glucose in the solution could not be determined. (auth)
