Studies on the Ralation between Dental Growth and Thyroid Gland Hazard by 131I
The relation between dental growth and thyroid injuries from internal irradiation was studied in fetal and young rats from mothers injected with I131 while pregnant. About 0.3% of I131, injected in 250 mu c doses during the last period of pregnancy, passed through the placenta to fetuses within 24 hr following injection. Growth retardation was noted in the offspring of rats injected with 1 mu c of I131 during pregnancy. Dental impediments were noted in young rats from mothers injected with 1 mu c of I131. Histologic changes in dentation were not seen. Paper chromatograms of fetal thyroid tissue revealed monoiodotyrosine, diiodotyrosine, thyroxine, and unknown I131-labeled compounds. (C.H.)
