THE OPERATION CONDITIONS IN CORONA DISCHARGE AREAS FOR SPARK COUNTERS WITH SPHERE OR WIRE ANODES (in French)

Spark counters of the wire-plane'' type, also called Rosenblum counters, are very good alpha detectors; being quite insensitive to BETA and gamma rays, they are then useful for neutron detection. A systematic survey of these detectors, studying their working characteristics and especially their pulse types, their sensitive volume, and the counting characteristics of detectors with one or several wires was made. From these measurements, simple design principles are deduced, and it is shown that the characteristics of wire- plane'' counters depend principally on the distance of the wire from the cathode. Finally, it is pointed out that spark detectors will never present a constant efficiency in their whole sensitive volume. (tr-auth)
