The method of tluorescent-cytological examination was used in order to detect early alterations occurring in trace elements of the white blood in the course of patients: treatment with radioactive substances (I/sup 131/ in thyrotoxicosis, Pa/sup 32/- in chronic leukema and erythremia, artificiai radon baths), as well as when employing isotopes for diagnostic blood was treated with fluorescent stain solutions (most often with acridine orange) during examination. In healthy persons the number of leukocytes with altered nuclear chimism varied from 2 to 6 per every 100 (2-6%) and their nucleus then showed red. Following curative use of I/sup 131/ and also in radiotherapy cytochemical shifts, reflected in the fluorescent picture of the blood, are recorded. In many patients the changes were of an undulating nature and by the degree of their intensity differ from one person to another. The tracer doses of I/sup 131/ were also liable to cause changes in the nucleinic metabolism of white blood cells. These, being very accurately recorded by the fluorescent-microscopic method, were of a reversible nature and pursued a subclinical course. The method was extremely sensitive and enabled a clear-cut account of early changes in the blood occurring under the effect of ionizing radiation not recognizable by nmeans of an ordinary morphological investigation.
