Eight day old chicken embryos irradiated with an x-ray dose of 1200 r die 5 to 6 hours after irradiation. Heart tissue of these embryos, taken immediately after irradiation, grows in a normal manner in a synthetic nutritive medium; while heart pieces explanted 3 to 6 hours after irradiation show a significant inhibition of growth in culture. Therefore, the heart tissue is not damaged directly, but indirectly; the longer the tissue remains in the organism after irradiation, the more it is damaged. Indirect radiation damage is not caused by depriving the cells of nutritive substances important for life (deficiency hypothesis). Heart tissue from non-irradiated embryos, which was stored for 3 hours in minced embryonal tissue before cultivation, grew normally in culture. The embryonal tissue was obtained from 8 day old embryos immediately after a lethal whole body irradlation. If the heart cells were exposed to the influence of a homogenate which was obtained from embryos 3 to 6 hours after irradiation, a strong inhibition of growth was observed in the culture of these heart tissues. These results show, that the indirect damage received by cells of the embryonal chicken hearts after a whole body irradiation is caused by the production of poisonous substances, which are not produced in the heart tissue ltself, but are brought to it from another place.
