The population of certain areas of Illinois has a high body content of Ra/sup 226/ from high levels in the drinking water. The total skeletal dose rate of Pb/sup 210/ and Po/sup 219/ in this population was studied by analysis of bone samples obtained from surgery and autopsy. The concentration of Pb/sup 210/ as a function of Ra/sup 226/ was calculated. Possible sources of Pb , and the relative importance of each, were surveyed. Emphasis was placed on the contribution of natural airborne radioactivity to the total body dose. (C.H.)
