RaD (Pb$sup 210$) IN THE HUMAN SKELETON. ESTIMATES OF THE EXPONENT OF THE RETENTION FUNCTION, THE SKELETAL CONTENT AND THE DOSE RATE IN RADIUM BURDENED PEOPLE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4709031
Measurements were made of radiation dose from Pb/sup 210/ in the human skeleton for 63 different subjects from 24 to 38 years after the administration of Ra/sup 226/. The analyses were made on 1 g bone samples obtained from autopsy. The bone was wet-ashed in nitric and perchloric acids and converted to 0.5 N hydrochloric acid. The Pb/sup 210/ decay product, Po/sup 210/ was then plated onto a silver disk and alpha counted Radium/sup 226/ was determined by the Rn emanation method. Calculations were made of terminal Ra/sup 226/ body burdens and average skeletal dose rates. (C.H.)
