Methods used in the investigation of the autolysis of DNA are described, and results obtained in the investigation of the effect of irradiation on the process in the bone marrow of rabbits are given. It was found that the quantity of DNA that can be separated from irradiated bone marrow is higher by approximately 15% than that which can be separated from nonirradiated bone marrow. The DNA freed after irradiation because of loosening of its firm bond with protein is apparently subjected to increased autolysis. The incomplete autolysis of DNA is increased by a factor of more than 3 immediately after local irradiation with a dose of 2000 r, whereas the autolysis of RNA does not change. (P.C.H.)
